Matthew Delman spent his formative years making up science fiction stories using Hot Wheels cars to stand in for action figures. The Adventures of Captain Nathan might be over, but the importance of engaging your audience — even an audience of one — has stuck with him.
This affinity for audience engagement led Matthew to a number of different industries, among them public relations, journalism, manuscript editing, and commentary. He blames this wide array of interests on several things: Public Relations because of his desire to communicate and share ideas, Journalism because he sees it as “writing the first draft of history,” Manuscript editing because he loves playing with words, and commentary because he’s just too damn opinionated for his own good. Oh yeah, he’s also the owner of an independent media company.
Since he started working full-time in the financial industry, he’s discovered a passion for the business world. Matthew can be found regularly reading the business sections of The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal, as well as Business Insider, The Motley Fool, Forbes, and Inc. Magazine alongside publishing insider periodicals such as Independent Publisher magazine, Publishers Weekly, and GalleyCat among many others.
Matthew has 10 years experience in manuscript editing, which extends to newspapers, magazines, and novels in addition to non-fiction reports and academic work. His journalism expertise includes He has himself articles on such distinct areas as travel, business, and the technology of the publishing world; these pieces have appeared in The Portland Press Herald (Portland, Maine), The Gloucester Daily Times (Gloucester, Mass.), and Independent Publisher magazine among others.
Much of Matthew’s public relations knowledge and experience comes from promoting his independent media firm, The Doctor Fantastique Company. Focused toward the burgeoning science fiction subgenre known as Steampunk, The Doctor Fantastique Company is an independent publisher of magazines, fiction, non-fiction, radio plays, webcomics, graphic novels, and is planning expansion into other media types. Its publications include Doctor Fantastique’s Show of Wonders magazine, several forthcoming novels and anthologies, the radio play The Clockwork Kid, and comics such as Out of Time.
Matthew writes commentary on a number of topics, but focuses his energies mainly toward censorship, the media industry, and finance. He’s written commentary previously on social media, customer service, and other topics.
Matthew’s short fiction has been published in FISSURE Magazine (November 2010) and by Nevermet Press (April and October 2011). He is currently working on four steampunk stories of varying length (novella to novel).
